Monsters: Animals

Animals represent the typical mammal that moves on four legs such as a dog, fox or bear. Many animals are not fearsome unless encountered in larger numbers, and many are fairly intelligent:

Description: Essentially an undead form of regular black dragon, it attacks primarily with its acidic breath weapon, which is quite potent even for its undead status. Like other forms of undead, it is immune to sleep, charm and hold spells, and can be turned by clerics (as a Spectre).

Description: Giant bats have a wingspan of 15 feet and weigh about 200 pounds. They have the same sensory abilities as normal-sized bats, but being much larger they are able to directly attack adventurer-sized prey.

Description: Giant mother rats are scavengers, but will attack to defend their nests and territories. A giant mother rat can grow to be up to five feet long and weigh nearly 70 pounds. A single giant mother rat will generally be shy but will attack fearlessly when cornered, biting and chewing with their sharp incisors. Any rat bite has a 5% chance of causing a disease.

Description: Hellhounds are canine creatures from the Realm of Nightmares that can breathe fire. A typical hellhound stands over four feet tall and weighs over 100 pounds, and can often surround itself in hellish fire to protect itself. In addition to its fiery breath weapon, hellhounds can rend flesh with its powerful bite.

Description: While adult krakens are possibly the largest known creature in Sisalus, juvenile krakens aren't quite as massive, about 75 feet long with 10 barbed tentacles that can reach an additional 250 feet or so. Krakens strike their opponents with their tentacles, then grab and crush them within their huge jaws. Once an opponent is hit by a tentacle, the juvenile kraken does an automatic 3d6 points of damage each round.

Description: The individual tentacle of a juvenile kraken can reach nearly 250 feet and does 3d6 points of damage upon a successful hit during combat. Once an opponent is hit by a tentacle, the victim is grabbed and its movements greatly restricted; the victim then attacks at a -4 penalty and the kraken does an automatic 3d6 points of damage each round.

Description: Manticores appear as overgrown lions with thick leathery wings and a terrifying face. Their tail ends in an assortment of spikes that the beast fires as projectiles (typically three per round). Manticores are about ten feet long and weigh half a ton, and are vicious predators, having a preference for human flesh.

Description: Normal ferrets (weasels) have long bodies, short legs and pointed, toothy snouts. They are cunning, crafty hunters that are surprisingly quick and agile in combat. When a ferret bites a living creature, it hangs on, rending with its teeth each round and causing automatic damage.

Description: These omnivorous rodents thrive almost anywhere but are relatively easy to dispatch or drive away.

Description: Rot grubs are one-inch long vermin found in carrion, dung and other such garbage and organic material. When a living creature contacts an area infested with rot grubs, they will attack and try to burrow into the victim's skin. If that occurs, the nasty creatures will then attempt to burrow themselves directly to the victim's heart, doing 2d6 damage each round they are not extracted and killed.

Description: Measuring about five feet long and three feet high, a rust monster's touch can transform any metal object into rust. Hence, metallic shields, chain and plate armor, and all metal-based weapons (such as a sword) can be immediately reduced to a powdery rust upon a successful hit (striking the creature as well as defending against it). Hence, rust monsters are best kept at a distance!

Description: Ranging from rust-red to reddish-brown in color with a dirty yellow underside, stirges are about one feet long and have a wingspan of about two feet. When a stirge attacks and successfully hits a creature, it attaches and automatically hits each round thereafter, draining blood equal to 1d4 damage.

Description: Young black dragons prefer to ambush their targets using their surroundings as cover, often choosing to hide underwater. Black dragons are more cruel than white dragons but are still motivated mostly by the urge to live, breed and collect treasure. Unlike their more mature brethren, young black dragons cannot yet cast spells.
